School Mural

Duffy Mural by Eddie Longford

The Indigenous Contemporary Artwork was painted by Eddie Longford. The mural was designed collaboratively by Eddie, some of our Year 6 leaders and the Duffy students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Our Year 6 leaders gathered the input of all current Duffy Primary students to identify what our school means to us, the purpose of the school and why it is special.

The artwork depicts learning on Ngunnawal/Ngambri country - it pays tribute to the local traditional owners. At the top of the artwork is the Canberra sky leading down to the Brindabella Mountain ranges. The mountains have the ancient trade routes that surrounding tribes used to travel to and from Ngunnawal/ Ngambri country. Below the mountains is Stromlo parks with all the multi-use tracks winding through the area.

As you look at the mural you will also see a lot of circles representing the Molonglo River which is a major natural resource used by the traditional people of the area. Between these circles are small dot circles and trackers which represents Stromlo Forest Park. Below the river there are a lot of circles which represent the school’s connection to the community (the suburbs, the students and staff’s homes). The large centre circle represents the school painted in school colours, with the U shapes representing the students, teachers and staff. Each side of the large centre circle you will see U shapes facing each other. This represents students and a teacher learning on country.

Our mural was officially unveiled at our 50th Anniversary Picnic Celebrations on the 28th of October, 2023, by Education Minister Yvette Berry and Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher.
